History of Nestlé in 150 year
In 1866, Charles and George Page founded Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company, offering Milkmaid brand in Europe. In 1867, Henri Nestle, a German-born pharmacist, founded Nestle, developing infant milk as an alternative to breastmilk. Rivalry ensued between Nestle and Anglo-Swiss when they both started offering substitute versions of the other’s original products: infant cereal and condensed milk. In 1882, Anglo-Swiss made expansion in the US but was halted due to the death of George Page. In 1902, Anglo-Swiss sold its operations in the US. In 1905, Nestle Group was born from the merger between Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company and Nestle which was the company that Henri Nestle established. Nestle started producing chocolate for export through Peter & Kohler. Since 1905, Nestle Group has expanded with subsidiaries across Asia, Africa, Australia, and Latin America, thereby becoming a global company. In 1916, Nestle Group bought Egron, a Norwegian dairy company for the production of milk powder. From after the war to the Great Depression, Nestle Group experienced crisis but also made developments in management and research that led to long lasting product lines, including Nescafe coffee. During World War II, Nestle Group supplied both the military and civilians with its products. After the war, Nestle Group expanded its product range and experienced growth throughout the post-war period. In the early 70s, Nestle Group entered the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. From the 1980s to 2005, Nestle Group made further expansion, promoting its profitable brands and discarding the dull ones. From 2006 to date, Nestle has continued to expand and enhanced its market position for its brands. Moreover, the company launched the Nestlé Cocoa Plan and Nescafé Plan to promote sustainability across its supply chains for cocoa and coffee .
